Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons Now Seeing Patients at CMH

HICKSVILLE, OH—In addition to the recently announced expanded cardiology coverage, Community Memorial Hospital has added three cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons to its Specialty Clinic lineup. Lutheran Medical Group physicians, Vincent A. Scavo, Jr., MD, Alan C. Peterson, MD, and Christopher A. Danby, MD are now seeing patients at CMH.

Lutheran Medical Group's cardiothoracic surgeons perform procedures such as aortic valve replacements, heart bypass surgery, heart transplants, and surgeries and therapies for thoracic aneurysms on patients with all types of heart conditions. The cardiothoracic surgical team works together and uses the latest in technology, devices, and medications to help ensure the best possible outcomes for patients.

Vincent A. Scavo, Jr., MD, specializes in minimally invasive off-pump coronary artery bypass, esophageal, and thoracic noncardiac surgeries. Dr. Scavo graduated from Purdue University in 1990, where he played varsity football and received Phi Beta Kappa honors. He earned a medical degree from Loyola University School of Medicine in Chicago in 1994 and was elected to membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. In 2002, he completed general and cardiothoracic surgery residencies at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Alan C. Peterson, MD, assisted in the development of northeastern Indiana's cardiac surgery and transplant programs. Prior to that, he served as assistant professor of thoracic surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center and as chief of cardiothoracic surgery at the Ann Arbor Veterans' Administration Medical Center. He also served as the senior registrar in cardiothoracic surgery at Great Ormand Street Hospital for Sick Children in London. In 1986, Dr. Peterson was one of 15 investigators worldwide in the experimental Jarvik-7 artificial heart program, and he was on the team that implanted northern Indiana's first artificial heart in 1987. Today, he serves as the principal physician consultant for the artificial heart program at Lutheran Hospital.

Christopher A. Danby, MD, completed a general surgery residency at Eisenhower Army Medical Center in 1991 and served two years as staff general surgeon at Winn Army Community Hospital in Fort Stewart, Ga., where he became skilled in video-assisted surgical procedures. Dr. Danby completed a cardiothoracic surgery residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1995, where he remained as a staff cardiothoracic surgeon for two years. During that time, he served as medical director of the School of Perfusion Technology, as quality assurance coordinator of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and as an assistant professor of surgery for the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences.

“We’re excited to have these three skilled physicians here at CMH,” said Mel Fahs, CEO. “They will be familiar faces to many, as they have performed surgery on many individuals in our community. The difference is that now our patients can see these physicians right here in Hicksville - close to home.”
