Speech Therapy - CMHThe Speech Language Therapy Department at Community Memorial Hospital is designed to provide each individual with the highest level of functioning at home and in the community. Our American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) certified Speech Language Pathologist provides inpatient and outpatient evaluations and treatment for individuals of all ages in the areas of speech, language, swallowing, and voice disorders. 

Our Speech-Language Pathologist will be involved in the individualized assessment and treatment plan for children and adults who may have trouble with:

  • Speaking clearly or making sounds precisely

  • Speech rhythm and fluency problems such as stuttering

  • Decreased loudness, inappropriate pitch, hoarseness, or a harsh sounding voice

  • Attention, memory, and problem-solving difficulties

  • Swallowing problems

  • Understanding language, such as following written or spoken directions

  • Word-finding, verbal expression, and organizing thoughts.

Who would benefit from Speech Therapy services?

  • Children with speech/language delays

  • Children who stutter

  • Children with a diagnosis on the Autism Spectrum

  • School age children with communication and comprehension difficulties

  • Adults recovering from a stroke, head injury, or specific cancers with speech, language, reading, writing, memory, problem solving, mathmatical, and/or swallowing difficulties

  • Adults suffering from Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), and vocal disorders such as vocal abuse, vocal nodules, neurologic disorders, and laryngeal cancer

What are the different speech therapy services avaliable at CMH?

Pediatric Speech and Language Therapy

  • Children with a history of chronic ear infections often have delayed production of speech and language.

  • Delayed development of language – a child who is using very limited words or speech sounds by the age of two.

  • Difficulty producing sounds – a child whose speech is very difficulty to understand due to mispronounced sounds or leaving sounds and syllables out of words.

Adult Speech Therapy
Speech therapy helps adults return to their previous or best possible speech, language, and swallowing abilities following, stroke, head injury, neurologic disease, or oral or laryngeal injury or surgery.

Swallowing Therapy
Evaluation and treatment of swallowing problems following reports of coughing, choking, feeling of food stuck in throat, or occurance of aspiration pneumonia. Stroke, neurologic disorders, generalized weakness, along with  head and neck cancer or other disorders may result in swallowing difficulties

  • Clinical evaluation of swallow function.

  • Modified Barium Swallow Study – video study of the swallow function conducted by the Radiologist and Speech Language Pathologist.

  • Treatment including positioning, diet modifications, exercises, and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (Vital Stim).
